While there have been fewer reports of H1N1 illness over the past few weeks, there is still the possibility of a third wave in the H1N1 pandemic. Historically, there has been a third wave of illness during a pandemic but it is unknown if this will happen with H1N1 or how severe it may be. Individuals who receive H1N1 vaccination would receive protection from illness if there is a third wave.
Pregnant women are being referred to their physician for vaccination.
The H1N1 flu vaccine is a separate vaccine from seasonal flu vaccine. Seasonal flu vaccine can be given at the same time as H1N1 flu vaccine if they are available at the same time. The CDC expects the H1N1 flu vaccine to have a similar safety profile as seasonal flu vaccines, which have a very good safety track record.
Adults will require one dose of H1N1 vaccine. Children ages 9 and under will require two doses, four weeks apart. Children under 6 months of age cannot receive flu vaccine; therefore it is important that those caring for this age group be vaccinated to offer protection.
